Detailed Activities
Back to resume
It's unclear if a list of activities on a resume is really desirable
anymore, since generally activities are not considered
as adding to marketable skills. However, many resumes have them
and they do provide a method for potential employers to
learn more about what kind of person I am. With that in mind,
below are all the activities I can remember which have been
on my resume from time to time:
- Leadership roles at the University of Michigan
-
Student leadership council (SLC): I served on the
student leadership council of my research center for three
years. The primary job of this committee
is to ensure
that the 40 graduate and 40 undergraduate students understand
the roles and responsibilities that are required in addition
to the usual university expectations. In addition, a substantial
effort was made to create a unified community and represent the
grievances of the students to the center leadership.
The titles I held were:
- SLC Social Chair: Responsible for organizing social events
off campus.
- SLC Communications Chair: Responsible for creating agendas
for meetings and taking notes.
- SLC President: Responsible for providing direction to the
SLC, organizing the other members, and representing the students to the
center leaders.

- Leadership activities at Caltech
-
Caltech Board of Control Representative: The board
of control at Caltech is the primary enforcement body for the
undergraduates population. Our job was to investigate alleged
violations of the Caltech honor code (such as cheating on tests and
stealing) and recommend appropriate actions to the dean.
-
Ruddock House: While at Caltech I was a member of Ruddock
house, one of the undergraduate residences on campus. The houses
are similar to fraternities at other colleges, except that they were
co-ed and every undergraduate was a member of at least one house.
While living there I held the following positions:
- Ruddock House Newspaper editor: Edited a biweekly newspaper four the house
with two other editors.
- Ruddock House Social team member: Organized weekly social events, including
a ski trip for 40 people.
- Ruddock House Annual Party Organizer: Organized the annual house party, including
delegating leaders for construction, food, drinks, flyers, and T-shirts.
Managed a budget of about $2500.
- Ruddock House Headwaiter: Managed a staff of about 10 waiters to serve dinner
each evening.
